SUMMARY:Twelve Words\, Three Women and the Reno Club
DESCRIPTION:Between 1976 and 1981\, Linda Brogan\, a multi-award winning playwright\, attended The Reno nightclub in Moss Side. On the corner of Princess Road\, this famous venue hosted the likes of Bob Marley\, Muhammad Ali\, and Tony Wilson. With live music and drinks\, it became a hub for the West Indian community in Manchester. \nThe club closed in 1986 and the building was demolished. Then\, over thirty years later in 2017\, Linda played a key role in excavating the site. \nThis is the story of how Linda met the three women with whom she created the new book\, Twelve Words. \nTwelve Words were the secret ingredients that unlocked truths\, secrets\, confessions and released trauma. \nWithout any formal expressive writing experience\, three women born in Moss-side and inner-city Manchester\, embarked on an excavation of their lives\, sculpted by Linda Brogan\, that together fused into a book of self-discovery and pride. It is rippled with pain\, anger\, violence and compensated with fun\, laughter and Manc humour.

SUMMARY:Longford: A Manchester Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Author Juliette Tomlinson introduces us to the unforgettable characters in her debut novel. \nIt was the year of 1864\, and the great city of Manchester was Cottonopolis\, rising with the sound of industry\, and the boom of a hundred mills. \nAt the heart of its energies was John Rylands\,  ‘the greatest merchant prince the world has ever seen’. This is the story of an empire built by a true Manchester man\, given meaning and worth by the extraordinary woman who loved him. \nJuliette Tomlinson has worked as a bookseller\, and then in publishing. She lives in Stretford\, Manchester\, yards from Longford Park\, which was a part of her childhood. The story will continue in a second book\, Sunnyside.

SUMMARY:‘Made in Manchester’ - An Evening with Brian Groom
DESCRIPTION:A rich and vivid history of Britain’s second city through the people who made it \n‘What Manchester thinks today\, England thinks tomorrow.’ \nLong before Manchester gave the world titans of industry\, comedy\, music and sport\, it was the cosmopolitan Roman fort of Mamucium. But it was as the ‘shock city’ of the Industrial Revolution that Manchester really made its mark on the world stage. A place built on hard work and innovation\, it is no coincidence that the digital age began here too\, with the world’s first stored-program computer\, Baby. \nA city as radical as it is revolutionary\, Manchester has always been a political hotbed. The Peterloo Massacre is immortalised in British folklore and the city was a centre for pioneering movements such as Chartism. Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst hailed from here and the city still treasures its wilful independence. Manchester’s spirited individuality has carried through into its artistic output too\, bringing the world Anthony Burgess\, L.S. Lowry\, Jeanette Winterson\, Joy Division and Oasis. Mention United or City almost anywhere and you’ll find fans\, and opinions. \nUntil now\, this magnificent city did not have its definitive history. From the author of the bestselling Northerners\, this work of unrivalled authority and breadth tells the story of a changing place and its remarkable people.

SUMMARY:Inshallah United - an Evening with Nooruddean Choudry
DESCRIPTION:‘For every Manc a religion’. Manchester. Birthplace of industry\, the Stone Roses\, the Class of 92 and\, in 1979\, a small brown man called Noz. This is the story of how\, and why\, he came to be a strictly halal Stretford Ender. \nNooruddean Choudry was born in 1979 ― the year\, a local football club lost the Cup Final to Arsenal courtesy of a man named Sunderland. That club would become an all-consuming obsession for young Nooruddean\, who would one day become a small brown man and\, vitally\, also a Red. \nInshallah United is the story of the first British-born son of a Pakistani family living in England’s second city. And geography is important\, because if it wasn’t for his mum and dad settling in Manchester rather than anywhere else in the world\, so much of what makes up Nooruddean’s identity could have been so different. As it was\, he grew up as a Muslim\, Manchester United supporting\, Morrissey-loving\, Maggie-hating\, working-class Manc. \nInshallah United is about growing up as a strictly halal Stretford Ender; a devout Muslim and diehard Red. It’s about praying five times a day that United would sign Alan Shearer and knock the Scousers off their perch. And it’s a deeply personal account of life as a Muslim Asian Mancunian kid in the late 80s and 90s\, bookmarked by the most successful period in Manchester United’s history. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets for this event are on a “pay what you can” basis. They range from £2 – £8 plus the Eventbrite booking fee.
