Our letter has now gone to the Co-op chair, the chief executive and the president of the Co-op National Members' Council. Thanks to everyone who signed. We're leaving this form open so that you can add your name. Please encourage others to come and do so.
The Picture House is a 100-year-old building in the heart of Chorlton which has been put up for sale by the owners, the Co-op. For the last few years it has been a funeral home.
Following a campaign by local Co-op members and the community, the Chorlton Community Land Trust (CLT) was made preferred bidder for the building and surrounding land. The CLT has submitted a proposal to restore the old cinema building to its former glory and turn it into a foodhall and community hub, with some new residences to the rear. You can read about the plan here: www.stayinalive.org.uk
The Co-op will now decide whether to accept the offer. The pandemic has introduced new risks and the CLT says that it's 'on a knife edge'.
The most likely alternative is a developer who will raze the building and build expensive flats to maximise profit. Even if it does not accept the CLT bid we want the Co-op to commit to keeping the building. The City Council agrees that it is a valuable heritage asset.
We have written a letter and we'd like as many people as possible to sign it. You can read the letter here.
