Manchester Poets – Sammy Weaver
Sammy Weaver is Rochdale’s first Poet Laureate, appointed as part of Rochdale’s year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture 25–26. Her debut pamphlet Angola, America (Seren, 2022) won Mslexia’s Poetry Pamphlet Prize 2021 and was shortlisted for the Michael Marks Poetry Award 2023. Her poems have appeared in The Irish Times, Colorado Review, The Moth, Mslexia, Anthropocene and The Island Review. In 2025, she was made a Yaddo Fellow and won a Northern Debut Award for Poetry.
She has ten years’ experience leading creative writing sessions in community, education and criminal justice settings. Sammy loves bringing the spark of creativity and poetry to people of all backgrounds. She believes that anyone can be a creative writer with the right support. She especially likes the challenge of inspiring people with societal or personal barriers to writing.
Sammy grew up on the Welsh Borders and now lives on a narrowboat on the Pennine waterways.
