Chorlton is famous for its kindness towards people with difficult lives. Could you host a survivor of modern slavery in your home?
Hope at Home is a charity which trains and supports volunteer hosts across the UK who have a spare bedroom and the goodwill to welcome a survivor of modern slavery into their home for a fixed period of time. Hosts are couples, families and single people who care about the marginalised in society and want to see individuals find freedom.
The charity is urgently looking for more hosts across Greater Manchester due to the numbers of referrals they are dealing with – these are people who are recognised as survivors of modern slavery by the Home Office but who are often facing homelessness, are at high risk of re-exploitation and need a safe place to stay for anywhere between about 4 weeks and 6 months. Many of those referred to us are also going through the asylum process or have received their refugee status.
A referral that the charity is currently dealing with is for “Mandi”, a 28-year-old female survivor from Cameroon. Mandi is facing homelessness as she has to leave her accommodation after being granted five years leave to remain in the UK. She is happy to relocate anywhere across south Manchester so that she can continue her studies and find work, private accommodation or apply for local authority housing. She doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol and she likes reading, cooking and meeting up with her friends. On the streets, she is at high risk of re-exploitation and abuse and she needs just a safe home for a few months to help give her the stability she needs to build her confidence and take her next steps forward.
Hope at Home sorts out all the logistics in relation to safeguarding, host training and support and placement.
